| DEPARTMENT OF EAST ASIAN STUDIES (University of Alberta ) - http://www.arts.ualberta.ca/~eastasia/courses.htm The Department of East Asian Studies has two different routes for the Chinese program. Students are advised to follow the route that most suits their program of study. NOTE: Route 1 is designed for students who do not speak any dialect of Chinese and who are not literate in Chinese. Route 2 is especially designed for those students with a background in a Chinese dialect and who are literate in Chinese. 1. FOR STUDENTS WITH NO PRIOR KNOWLEDGE OF CHINESE: Students enroll in China 101 in the first semester and China 102 in the second. In the second year, students will likely proceed to China 201 and 202. 2. FOR SPEAKERS OF OTHER DIALECTS: If students have a background in one of the regional dialects of Chinese such as Cantonese, Toisanese, Hokkien, or Hakka, as well as some knowledge of written Chinese, they will choose this route. These students will register for China 211 and 212 in their first year of study. Students may then proceed to senior level literature courses, such as China 414 and 455. |
