| University of Toronto - http://www.artsci.utoronto.ca/languages/languages-offered/chinese People study modern and ancient languages at university for a variety of reasons. Some want to study different literatures and cultures, others hope to find careers in international business or law, others hope to reconnect with the language of their family roots, still others need languages for advanced research. No matter what the motivation is for beginning study, all students of language discover new ways in which languages work, different ways of expressing ideas, and an appreciation of the difficulties inherent in learning a new vocabulary and grammar. Language study is a challenging intellectual activity, but the rewards for acquiring another language are diverse. It doesn't matter which language you choose. Each language will provide new types of interaction with different people, different cultures, different literatures, different histories. |
